A Guide to Planning Your Perfect Engagement Session

Write in style: I am not a writer, or at least I never thought I was. For most of my life, I have struggled to understand myself. When I discovered photography, my world as an introvert began to fade. Suddenly I was always searching for the next picture, the next story, the next paid job.

Now, at thirty-five years old, married with two children, I find myself circling back to the same question: Who am I, and where do I fit in?

For a long time, I avoided talking about myself. I tried to let my work speak for me. But in today’s world, it seems that those who move ahead are the ones willing to speak loudly through a screen or post or story. Out of all the platforms available, a blog makes the most sense to me. It feels like a journal, a public journal, where I can share my thoughts, ideas, and the moments I capture through my lens.

Day One
Yesterday I woke up feeling like someone had taken my mind and left a clapping monkey in its place. I spent the day preparing for an evening photoshoot while caring for my three-year-old, picking up my six-year-old, and dropping them both off at my mother-in-law’s house so I could work.

As I began the shoot on a windy day in one of the wealthiest parts of Dallas, two beautiful people approached me. They were my subjects, a couple soon to be married. Something changed inside me as I started photographing them. I was witnessing a connection between two people in love, two people who wanted to be seen, celebrated, and remembered.

As the camera clicked, I felt myself come alive again. By the end of it, I was not just tired. I was fulfilled. I had done something that mattered.

This journey of being a photographer, a husband, and a father is beginning again. I am learning how to move through this world with honesty, to do some good, and to make a living.

More than anything, I am learning how to see again, both through my camera and within myself.
